As a humble group of high-schoolers, we formed Team Caleb so he knew that no matter how hard it got, he always had a huge team behind him. Prior to his diagnosis, Caleb was an avid sports player; between basketball and baseball, he was a model athlete, setting the ultimate precedent for sportsmanship and leadership. He faced his illness the same way he faced any opponent—head on and with a smile on his face. Of everything Caleb endured during his three year battle, one of the hardest parts was not being able to play the games he loved. While there was nothing we could do to get Caleb back in the game, there are millions of children throughout the US who are sidelined due to unfortunate circumstances. In Caleb’s memory, we have made it our mission to provide sports programs in underprivileged communities with the necessary funds and equipment to play the sports every child loves. The first community to join our team was Talcott Fine Arts and Museum Academy, a Title I school in Chicago. When COVID hit, their sports program was one of the first to get cut. Thanks to our generous supports, we were able to donate 84 basketball uniforms to the 5th-8th grade basketball teams! In January 2022, we were introduced to Haugan Elementary School. Located in Downtown Chicago, their school consists of almost 900 students, most of whom are part of the Latinex community. Recess and gym is every kid’s favorite time of the school day–a time for them to be active and get out some energy; however, Haugan has nearly 200 students at recess simultaneously. In May 2022, we were connected with Damion Porter Sr, the driving force of Team Illinois International (TII). TII is an organization that strives to elevate the athletic profiles of at-risk and under-served student athletes in Illinois to help them qualify for D1 basketball scholarships. VertiMax training sessions with a third-party company can cost over $50/hour, making it entirely inaccessible to athletes at TII. Thanks to your donations, Damion and the coaches at TII can continue preparing these students for college-level basketball and beyond.
